Welcome from the RAS President

The RAS-NAM is the UK's premier meeting for the astronomy, solar system and space science communities. During five event-packed days it brings together international researchers, university academics, early career scientists and post-graduate students across a broad range of sub-disciplines to discuss recent discoveries and developments. The NAM is further enriched when it is joined, as this year, by the solar physics and MIST communities. Through talks, poster displays, community meetings, receptions, public lectures and social activities, the NAM provides a unique opportunity to network and to showcase your work. I look forward to seeing you in Preston.

Professor Michael Rowan-Robinson, RAS President, October 2006

General Information

The conference will be held on the main campus of the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, with plenary sessions hosted in the Harrington Lecture Theatre, and parallel sessions in Harrington, Brook, Adelphi and Greenbank Buildings (see Travel & Maps).

Opening with the Keynote address from Tim de Zeeuw, the conference will include 8 plenary talks and around 40 parallel sessions (see full programme), with themes drawn from the broad interests of the UK astronomical, solar-physics and solar-terrestrial communities. There will also be ample space for poster presentations. In addition, the NAM 2007 programme features: the RAS George Darwin Lecture by Reinhard Genzel; the presentation of the RAS medals and prizes in the NAM Student Poster competition; a STFC and Community Forum; Facilities users' meetings and various special interest sessions.

The social programme includes two evening receptions, a conference dinner at the National Football Museum (co-located with Preston North End FC), Astronomy Question Time, a public lecture and a 5-a-side football tournament.

Internet access will be provided via wireless and local networked computers for the duration of the conference. Participants will be able to make use of terminals in Greenbank and Brook Buildings, and the local wireless service (where available).

Morning coffee and afternoon tea breaks will be held close to the meeting rooms in Greenbank and Harrington Buildings. Lunch will be served in the Harrington Building.

Potential participants should be aware that they are required to register before submitting an abstract for an oral or poster presentation. Abstract submission should be done through the personalised web form linked from the confirmation of registration web page and e-mail. Please see the registration pages for more details.

The organisers strongly encourage the authors of all accepted oral presentations to submit powerpoint versions of their talks in advance of the meeting. This will enable files to be preloaded onto local computers and tested for problems. Details of the submission process will be announced closer to the date.

The press office will be available in the Greenbank Building and will take advantage of the Department of Journalism broadcasting facilities (see Travel & Maps).

Exhibitors

The Meeting is hosting both commercial and scientific exhibtors. These will be in the foyer areas of Greenbank and Harrington buildings, adjacent to the Lecture Theatres of both buildings where plenary and large parallel sessions are taking place.
